New ride to open at Edinburgh Dungeon

24 Feb 2009

Visitors to Edinburgh will be able to visit a brand new attraction in the city from April when Extremis: Drop Ride to Doom is opened at Edinburgh Dungeon.

Extremis, which is Edinburgh's first ever drop ride, falls three storeys in just one second and is based on the city's Grassmarket hangings of the 17th and 18th centuries.

It is the Edinburgh Dungeon's second ride, joining a boat trip that passes through the territory of the legendary cannibal Sawney Bean.

Iain Scouller, general manager of the Edinburgh Dungeon, said: 'Edinburgh has never seen the likes of Extremis before. This is the first drop ride to be built in the city – and what an introduction.

'Extremis actually means "at the very point of death in Latin" and trust me, there's no better name for this ride – plummeting down that fast in the dark leaves your stomach above your head, your heart pounding and your blood buzzing long after you've braved the drop.'

Like its counterpart in London, the Edinburgh Dungeon brings the darkest and most grisly aspects of the city's history to life through live shows and exhibitions.

There are similar attractions based in York, Hamburg and Amsterdam.
