24 Feb 2009

Tourism Queensland has announced that its 'best job in the world' initiative saw a total of 34,686 applying to work as an island caretaker on Australia's Great Barrier Reef islands.

Submissions were received from more than 200 countries in what the agency claims was 'arguably one of the most successful tourism promotions ever mounted'.

More than 2.3m people visited the website advertising the island caretaker job and of the tens of thousands of individuals who applied, 7,500 did so in the last 48 hours before the submission period ended.

Most applications came from the United States (11,565), followed by Canada (2,791), Great Britain (2,262) and Australia (2,064).

The successful individual will spend six months exploring the Great Barrier Reef islands and giving regular reports online and to the media about the experience.

More than 600 islands are located along the Great Barrier Reef, as well as 2,900 individual reefs and over 25 holiday resorts.

People who would like to visit the area themselves can fly to Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, with airlines including Qantas, Cathay Pacific and Emirates.
