Port Authority to invest $376m in JFK airport
24 Feb 2009
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced plans to invest some $376m (£259m) in John F Kennedy airport.
Representing the second phase of a delay reduction programme at the airport, the investment will allow a phase of work to begin in June and be completed some time in 2011.
Additional access points for planes, new taxiways to improve aircraft queuing and easier transit between taxiways and terminal gates are among the developments that are hoped to reduce delays for passengers.
Airlines are adjusting their timetables to mitigate disruption during the 120 days that the runway at New York JFK airport will be closed in 2010.
Port Authority chairman Anthony Coscia said: 'These projects have a single goal: to give every one of our 48m annual customers at JFK a more efficient, passenger-friendly airport.
'This robust investment [is also] creating construction jobs more than 1,000 workers in the peak period which is certainly welcome news in the present economy.'
The Port Authority also operates Newark, LaGuardia and Stewart international airports, as well as bus and marine terminals throughout New York and New Jersey.
