Cate Blanchett directs first play in Melbourne

25 Feb 2009

Hollywood actress Cate Blanchett is directing her first play this year, which will open in Melbourne at the beginning of March.

The Year of Magical Thinking will be premiered at the city's new MTC Theatre on 4 March and will run until 11 April.

Blanchett, who is currently enjoying critical acclaim for her role in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, was born in Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria in south-east Australia.

The play she is directing was written by the American novelist Joan Didion and has already been the subject of a production at London's National Theatre starring Vanessa Redgrave.

It tells the story of a woman who has to cope with losing her partner of 40 years while also dealing with the illness suffered by her only child.

People planning a visit to Melbourne over the coming months may also get the chance to attend the city's International Comedy Festival, which will take place between 1 and 26 April.
