Barcelona 'an international film set'

26 Feb 2009

Barcelona can now be considered an 'international film set' owing to the appeal that it has for international movie directors and producers, according to the city mayor.

Jordi Hereu commented on Barcelona's cinematic appeal following this year's Academy Awards ceremony, which saw Penelope Cruz receive the best supporting actress honour for her role in the Woody Allen film Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Mr Hereu congratulated the actress on her award and said that the success endorsed Barcelona's support of culture and creativity.

According to the city council, Barcelona was used as the location for 55 feature films, mini series and TV movies in 2008, as well as 425 documentaries.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona was shot in a number of famous locations around the Catalan city, including the Rambla, Parc Guell, Tibidabo, the Museu Picasso and the Sagrada Familia.

Allen has often shown a fondness for particular cities in his work, with Manhattan, Annie Hall and other films based in New York and the more recent Match Point and Cassandra's Dream set in London.
