The chief executive of Sydney airport has celebrated the forthcoming launch of
Virgin Atlantic subsidiary V Australia, saying that the development confirms Sydney as its country's 'national gateway'.
V Australia will launch tomorrow (27 February) and initially operate flights from Sydney to Los Angeles, with plans to offer services from Brisbane and Melbourne in the future.
Russell Balding described the launch of the airline as 'another great win' for Sydney airport.
He added: 'Sydney airport's international terminal is currently undergoing a $500m expansion and upgrade of its facilities.
'This is a strategically important infrastructure investment. V Australia's decision to fly first from Sydney is a strong sign of support for the construction that is currently underway.'
The investment in the airport will equip it with new passenger facilities in departure areas, new baggage handling systems and other improvements.
Virgin president Sir Richard Branson set off on an eight-day trip around the world this week to celebrate the launch of V Australia, which will see him visit Hong Kong, Sydney and Los Angeles before returning to London.
