Dubai 'attracts visitors from all walks of life'

2 Mar 2009

Dubai is a popular holiday destination among people from all walks of life, not only the well-off, according to a travel writer.

Lara Dunston, author of the DK Eyewitness guide to Dubai, said that the image of the emirate as a 'playground for the rich' has partly been promoted by the media because 'glamour sells'.

She said that there is 'so much more' to the destination than its glitzy and glamorous side.

'[Dubai] has a rich heritage and culture rooted in Bedouin traditions of hospitality and Islam, like the country it's a part of – the United Arab Emirates,' Ms Dunston said.

'People from all over the world, all walks of life, from Russian package tourists to Australian backpackers to English families [visit] Dubai.'

The emirate's tourism marketing department recently announced that the Dubai Metro network is set to be up-and-running by September this year.

Also opening will be the Dubai Fountain, which will provide a centrepiece to the Burj Dubai lake area.
