France 'a good option for a budget break'

9 Mar 2009

British travellers looking for an affordable getaway this year will find plenty of holiday options in France, according to an industry spokesman.

Commenting on the likely effect of the recession on French tourism, Jean-Pierre Courteau, director of government tourist office Maison de la France, said the first factor in the country's favour is its easy accessibility for Brits.

Mr Courteau pointed out that rail connections make it possible for holidaymakers to visit France without flying.

He added: 'France gives a good opportunity to travel on a budget. A lot of regions and providers do have budget offers.

'I don't say that we are going to profit from the crunch and the financial situation but people who are aware of not flying and travelling on a budget will come to France this year.'

With around 11m annual visitors, Britain is the biggest source market for the French tourism industry, according to Mr Courteau.

The most popular destinations in the country include Paris, the capital city, Nice on the south coast and the Dordogne region in the south-east.
