Cruising 'on the up' at Dover
11 Mar 2009
The British port of Dover has reported that cruising is 'booming' this year, despite the credit crunch and recession.
Some 152 cruise liners are expected to call at the port throughout 2009, carrying more than 200,000 passengers.
Kate O'Hara, head of marketing at the port, said the all-inclusive nature of cruises is a 'major plus' for travellers who are hoping to stick to a set budget.
She added: 'The demographic spread of cruise travellers - many of whom are not affected by mortgage interest rates or job insecurity - is a major growth factor.
'The cruise industry has broadened dramatically over recent years and has become increasingly popular among families.'
Dover will boost its profile as a cruise port this year when it hosts the 2009 Cruise Convention between 17 and 19 June.
A number of ships will also be making their first calls at the port this year, including liners owned by Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises and Costa.
Dover recently claimed that it was helping to keep 'UK consumers and industry afloat', with consumer and industrial goods accounting for nearly half of all the cargo coming into the port by ferry.
