New system 'to improve Belfast International'

30 Mar 2009

Belfast International airport has announced the launch of a new flight management system that is expected to have a substantial benefit for operations at the hub.

The new ICS Computing technology will reportedly achieve 'major time and cost savings' and put Belfast International 'ahead of its competitors in terms of operating efficiencies'.

More than 5m passengers are expected to pass through the airport this year, meaning the flight management system's provision of information to public display boards and the web must be accurate and seamless.

Denis Brown, Belfast International's technical services manager, said the flight management system is 'at the very heart' of the airport's business.

He added: 'It's an essential communication tool which allows all airport staff - air traffic control, apron control, airport police and customs - to access real time information on each flight and coordinate a timely response.

'So far we are absolutely delighted with the new system and expect its improved processing speed will save us one to two days per week on administration time - which in itself is really quite remarkable.'

It was announced earlier this week that more than half of passengers on the Continental Airlines flight from Belfast International to New York use the service to connect to onward destinations in the US such as Orlando, Las Vegas and Miami.
