Singapore Botanic Gardens marks 150th anniversary

8 Apr 2009

A number of events and exhibitions will be held at Singapore's Botanic Gardens (SBG) throughout 2009 to celebrate its 150th anniversary.

The 52-acre site was modelled on England's Kew Gardens when it was founded in 1859 and has grown into one of Singapore's most popular attractions, welcoming more than 3m visitors every year.

It is home to one of Asia's largest collections of rare palms, an area of primeval forest and an orchid culture that is reportedly the most comprehensive in the world.

Events taking place to celebrate the 150th anniversary this year include an exhibition on Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace opening in July and a photo display exploring the world's rainforests due to open in December.

Singapore Tourism Board spokesperson Divya Panickar said: 'The 150th anniversary of the founding of the SBG is truly a milestone event in the city's history.

'Like Singapore itself, the SBG keeps evolving to ensure it remains a vital and integral part in the lives of the city's residents and a highlight on any visitor's itinerary.'

Other natural attractions that travellers can visit in Singapore include the Night Safari, the Buloh wetlands and the Bukit Timah nature reserve.
