Spain visitors urged to explore beyond beaches

9 Apr 2009

People planning a visit to Spain this year have been urged to explore beyond the country's famous beaches to see what else it has to offer.

Derek Moore, chairman of the Association of Independent Tour Operators, said that visitors to Spain can take part in a variety of activities and see sights other than the mainstream tourist destinations.

To make travellers more aware of the country's diversity, tourism authorities should launch campaigns moving attention away from 'sun, sea and sand', according to Mr Moore.

'Spain has got a lot of product to offer other than the beaches,' he said.

'For example, people will go to Peru to go trekking but they could go trekking in the south of Andalucia province.'

One lesser-known aspect of the Spanish tourism industry is its winter sports scene, with a number of resorts located across the country that offer good conditions for skiing and snowboarding.

Alyn Morgan of the Ski Club of Great Britain recently described the current conditions at Sierra Nevada in Andalucia as 'fantastic' considering the location of the resort.
