Sustainable trips 'easy' in California

14 Apr 2009

Sustainable holidays are an easy option in California, according to the tourist board that represents the North American state.

The California Travel and Tourism Commission (CTTC) said that there is a wide range of environmentally friendly measures and initiatives in place at the state's airports, attractions and cities.

Caroline Beteta, president and chief executive of the CTTC, said: 'With millions of visitors touring California every year and leaving behind their carbon footprint, it is our responsibility as part of the tourism industry to not only provide sustainable travel alternatives, but to help make those options effortless so our travellers will embrace them on their next visit to the Golden State.'

Airports such as Los Angeles International, Palmdale and Van Nuys are 'fast evolving into the greenest transportation centres in the world', according to the CTTC, with innovations including eco-friendly lighting.

At Universal Studios Hollywood in Los Angeles, the new Simpsons Ride is being equipped with technologies including the largest installation of light-emitting diodes ever used for a theme park attraction.

San Francisco was rated one of the top ten green cities in the US in a National Geographic guide and boasts environmental advantages including an extensive public transport network and several parks and open spaces.

Flights to San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego and other California cities are available with carriers including Virgin Atlantic, British Airways and American Airlines.
