New Zealand tourism initiative proving popular

17 Apr 2009

A new initiative that allows visitors to New Zealand to give video reviews of their trip to the country has been a big success, with the recordings seeing more than 100,000 hits on YouTube.

Tourism New Zealand has set up a mobile studio called the Collection Point that travels all over the country collecting international tourists' 'video raves' and posting them on social networking sites.

Part of a UK marketing campaign, the initiative has reportedly been described by the Sunday Times as one of the ten 'most ingenious' travel industry offers during the recession.

George Hickton, chief executive of Tourism New Zealand, said: 'Social media is used by people from all walks of life to connect with people back home while they are travelling.

'Add to this the fact that word-of-mouth is one of the most effective marketing tools to promote a destination, and the 100,000 views milestone shows that the Collection Point has really proven its worth.'

The Collection Point will have visited 40 New Zealand towns by the time it finishes its nationwide tour at the end of April, from Cape Reinga in the north to the Caitlins in the south.

Tourism New Zealand recently announced that an exhibition dedicated to the great explorer Kupe had moved from Wellington to Rotorua.
