Govt to go ahead with APD increase

It was confirmed in the Budget today (22 April) that the government is to go ahead with its plans to increase air passenger duty (APD).
Calls from airlines and various other travel industry organisations to abandon the strategy were ignored, meaning that taxes on flights out of the UK will rise by as much as 112% next year.
The duty will be split up into four bands, with travellers paying different amounts depending on how far they are flying.
EasyJet was among the critics of chancellor Alistair Darling, saying that he had now made the wrong move with regards to flight taxation for two consecutive years.
Toby Nicol, the airline's communications director, said: 'The chancellor of the exchequer has missed the opportunity to give air passengers a much-deserved shot in the arm by refusing to ditch his planned £1bn raid on the airline industry over the next two years.'
The government is justifying its decision to raise APD by claiming that it will help the environment. Today's Budget included a pledge that Britain will cut its carbon emissions by 34% by 2020.
