Chicago 'offers a truly American experience'

23 Apr 2009

The tourist board of Chicago has said that foreign visitors to the city will be offered a 'truly American experience' this year.

A variety of events and activities will be taking place across the city over the spring and summer, starting with Memorial Day on 25 May.

This occasion will mark the start of the summer festival season and will feature celebrations of American presidents, food and wine events, shopping promotions, music and more.

One of Chicago's most famous attractions, the Sears Tower, will open a new viewing area this summer consisting of four glass bays that extend over the west side of the 103rd floor, offering views that stretch for 50 miles over four states.

Cultural highlights will include a new Harry Potter exhibition at the Museum of Science and Industry that will be open until 27 September and a show at the Field Museum telling the story of the Whydah, the first authentic pirate ship ever found.

Travellers can catch flights to Chicago with a number of carriers, including Northwest Airlines, KLM, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.
