Flybe, Abta criticise govt's APD decision

Flybe and Abta - The Travel Association have joined the chorus of criticism for the government after yesterday's (22 April) Budget.
The regional airline reacted with 'extreme disappointment' to the government's decision to go ahead with its plans to increase air passenger duty (APD) in November.
Chief commercial officer Mike Rutter said: 'The government's own figures show that aviation already pays its own way. By slapping another tax on a British success story like aviation, the chancellor runs the risk of endangering a recovery that could be led by aviation.'
Abta said that rises in flight taxes will 'hit hardworking Brits, jobs and developing nations'.
'This unfair tax already costs air travellers from the UK £2bn and covers its environmental costs. This holiday tax represents a heavy and growing burden on families at a time when they are being forced to reconsider whether they can afford to take a well-earned break,' chief executive Mark Tanzer commented.
British Airways warned earlier this week that the APD increase could increase the cost of a family holiday to Australia by up to £360.
