Europe and US 'top foreign destinations over Easter'
24 Apr 2009
Familiarity proved a more important factor than value for British travellers over the Easter holiday, according to International Currency Exchange (Ice), with Europe and the US remaining the most popular overseas destinations despite the weak pound.
The euro and the US dollar were by far the most popular currencies ahead of the Easter break, accounting for more than three quarters of the company's sales.
Thailand's baht saw the third highest level of demand, accounting for 7% of orders received by Ice before the spring break, followed by the Australian dollar (4%) and the Mexican peso (3%).
Andrew Hamilton, head of marketing for Ice, said: 'Families want holidays that are low on stress and high in convenience and that means short journeys by train, car, sea or plane into Europe or guaranteed sunshine and family friendly holidays in the US.
'That said, Thailand is proving to be a popular destination after Europe and the US. This long-haul escape not only offers fantastic beaches and scenery but relatively low everyday costs.'
According to a study released by Ice last month, the top ten currencies for Brits also include the Czech koruna, the Malaysian ringgit and the Hong Kong dollar.
