North-west England will be the place to be for all culture vultures later this year when the Manchester International Festival is held from 2 to 19 July.
This giant celebration of all things contemporary and creative will kick of with a weekend of events including a procession on 5 July organised by the Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller, which will be visible from the Deangate mile.
Music fans will be particularly spoilt for choice, with Mercury Music Prize winners Elbow set to perform with the Halle Orchestra at Bridgewater Hall on 8 and 9 July, followed by hip-hop legends De La Soul at the Ritz on 16 and 17 July.
The man described by the festival organisers as 'the greatest male ballet dancer of his generation', Carlos Acosta, will perform at the Lowry from 9 to 11 July with accompaniment from the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.
An indulgent Festival Feast will help to bring this year's proceedings to a close on 18 July, inviting some 2,000 visitors to try delicacies created by renowned culinary experts.
A biennial event, the Manchester International Festival was held for the first time in 2007 and featured highlights including the debut of Monkey: Journey to the West, the opera composed by Damon Albarn.
