This unusual and popular event sees a host of people dressed up as mermaids, sea kings and other aquatic entities parading through the streets of Coney Island along with marching bands, antique cars and other spectacles.
Each year sees a new famous face participate in various parts of the parade, with previous celebrity attendees including Moby, Queen Latifah and David Byrne.
The Mermaid Parade is reportedly the largest art procession in America and 'one of New York City's greatest summer events', according to its organisers.
