Movies to showcase South Australia

27 Apr 2009

South Australia could see a boost to its tourism profile this year as a number of films featuring destinations in the region are released.

The South Australia tourist board said that the state's 'rich and varied landscape' had been a 'natural choice' for a number of filmmakers, including Scott Hicks, the director of The Boys are Back.

Starring Academy Award nominee Clive Owen, the movie was shot in more than 33 locations across South Australia, including the Adelaide Hills and the Fleurieu peninsula.

Hicks said: 'Adelaide has been my home since I came to Australia as a teenager. I've always been inspired by South Australia, by its natural beauty and variety of landscape and environment.'

Also due to hit screens this year is Last Ride starring the Australian actor Hugo Weaving, a road movie that was shot over some 5,500km of land, taking in a number of remote locations.

The marine animals of South Australia are the stars of the new IMAX 3D film Under the Sea, which is narrated by Jim Carrey and features a number of creatures who make their habitat around the Eyre peninsula.

South Australia covers the central southern part of the country and can be reached by catching flights to Adelaide, the state capital.
