Air Berlin celebrates 30th anniversary

28 Apr 2009

The year 2009 marks 30 years since Air Berlin first began flight operations from Berlin-Tegel airport, a landmark that has been celebrated by the airline and London Stansted airport, one of its major bases in the UK.

Air Berlin is now Germany's second largest airline after Lufthansa, carrying nearly 30m passengers a year.

It is the third largest carrier based at London Stansted, offering direct flights to cities including Dusseldorf, Berlin and Munich in Germany and onward connections to New York, Bangkok, Miami, the Maldives and other destinations.

Titus Johnson, Air Berlin's country manager for the UK and Ireland, said: 'Our extensive, modern fleet, superior customer service and low fares continue to position us as one of the world's most innovative airlines and we very much look forward to celebrating other landmark anniversaries in years to come.'

London Stansted's commercial and development director Nick Barton said that the airport will continue to support Air Berlin's UK operations, which have proved popular with business and leisure passengers since 2002.

Stansted saw its international network boosted this year by the launch of new flights to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which facilitate onward connections to destinations in Australia, China, India and other countries.
