Brits 'want new experiences on holiday'

30 Apr 2009

UK travellers are showing a growing interest in holidays that offer new and unusual experiences, research carried out by YouGov for VisitScotland suggests.

A survey of more than 2,200 adults across the UK found that 82% would be interested in trying one of the 'perfect experiences' offered through the VisitScotland website.

These include a distillery tour and whisky tasting session, a cooking class with a Michelin-starred chef and a day out on a private yacht visiting unexplored islands.

Three quarters (74%) of respondents to the survey said they have a lifetime ambition they would like to fulfil on holiday, a ratio that increased to 82% in the 18- to 24-year-old age group.

Noelle Campbell, product manager for VisitScotland, said: 'The research backs up what we have known for some time - that people are looking for more from their holiday.

'Many people are choosing not to spend their money on overseas trips this year in favour of holidaying at home and the experiential packages available through our Perfect Day campaign showcase the many unique and diverse opportunities that will make a holiday at home a trip of a lifetime.'

The Perfect Day campaign, which was launched this week, is expected to reach more than 36m people across the UK, making it Scotland's biggest ever domestic tourism promotion.
