Fourth of July to go off with a bang in New York

30 Apr 2009

Travellers visiting New York as the city celebrates Independence Day this year will have the opportunity to see one of America's most famous and elaborate fireworks displays.

The Macy's Fourth of July fireworks show is known around the world for its extravagance, with pyrotechnic displays being launched from different locations around New York City simultaneously.

Some 14,000 fireworks are set off from barges along Manhattan's east river, a spectacle that visitors can take in while listening to musical accompaniment on digital radios.

Tourists can head to locations including the Brooklyn Heights Promenade and East River Park in Manhattan to see the display or alternatively take the luxury option by setting off on a cruise.

Various celebratory events and festivals are held all over New York to celebrate Independence Day, including a festival on Water Street and a hot dog eating contest in Coney Island.

Music fans will also have the option to head to Battery Park on 4 July to see some live concerts.
