Dubai picked up the World Travel Award for the leading destination in the Middle East at a ceremony held last night (5 May).
The Middle East gala ceremony of the 2009 World Travel Awards was held at the Monarch Dubai and represented the conclusion of a polling process that included around 42,000 voters this year.
Emirates was among the winners, picking up the accolade for the leading economy airline, while Emaar's The Address was voted the Middle East's best new hotel.
A number of companies based in Abu Dhabi also enjoyed success, with Etihad picking up the award for the Middle East's best airline and Saadiyat Island named the region's leading tourism development project.
Graham Cooke, founder of the World Travel Awards, said: 'I am excited to see that the Middle East's tourism offering is quickly diversifying and new players are taking great interest in being destinations, airlines or hotels of choice.
'It is particularly impressive to note that some of the major award winners tonight are very new companies that have quickly set themselves to be leading players in the travel, tourism and hospitality business.'
The Africa ceremony of the 2009 World Travel Awards will be held in Durban, South Africa on 11 May, followed by events in Singapore, Mexico and other destinations later in the year.
