'Lost city' opened to visitors in Sydney

11 May 2009

Tourists in Sydney can now visit an attraction described by Tourism Australia as a 'lost city', which was recently reopened.

The Paddington Reservoir on Oxford Street consists of two 1,023-square-metre chambers that were built in 1866 and 1878 but decommissioned in 1899 to become a garage.

Since 1993, the site has been abandoned but for graffiti artists who decorated the walls with stunning murals and frescoes.

A $10m (£5m) restoration project was completed this year, creating a new Romanesque sunken garden and a lake at the centre of the site, a hanging garden canopy around the perimeter and a chamber used to showcase the graffiti art.

Now known as Paddington Reservoir Gardens, the location will be used as a venue for public markets, art and film festivals, retail fairs and other events.

Travellers planning to visit Sydney between 26 May and 14 June this year will be able to experience Vivid Sydney, which is described as a 'festival of music, light and ideas'.
