New Zealand prepares to go cinema crazy

14 May 2009

The New Zealand International Film Festivals series will get underway in July, providing some top cultural entertainment for people visiting the country.

Auckland will be the first city to host an event in the 2009 season, with a festival running from 9 to 26 July.

Originally founded in 1968 as part of the Auckland Festival, this celebration of film has grown in stature over the years, attracting an audience of more than 100,000 in 2005.

Attention will then move to the New Zealand city of Christchurch, which will host its festival from 30 July to 16 August. Movies that were screened at this event last year include the suspenseful horror The Orphanage and the documentary Man on Wire.

The Dunedin Film Festival will be the third major event in the 2009 season, running from 25 July to 10 August.

After these festivals in some of New Zealand's biggest cities, the International Film Festivals series will head off on tour to provincial locations around the country including Gisborne and Queenstown.
