Crossrail construction underway in London
15 May 2009
The construction of Crossrail, the new London railway network, was officially launched in the capital today (15 May).
London mayor Boris Johnson and prime minister Gordon Brown were among the officials who visited Canary Wharf to see the foundations of the first Crossrail station being laid.
The Canary Wharf station, which will be the first to be constructed, will include 100,000 square feet of retail space and a rooftop park.
There will also be stations at Heathrow, Paddington, Liverpool Street and other locations on the Crossrail route, which will link Maidenhead, Berkshire in the west to Shenfield, Essex in the east.
Speaking at the opening ceremony today, the prime minister said: 'Many people said it would never be built, but today we are celebrating a defining moment for London as Crossrail's construction gets underway.
'Crossrail will not only mean faster journey times across the capital and beyond, it will also bring a massive economic boost to the city, creating thousands of jobs and adding at least £20bn to our economy.'
Crossrail is scheduled to begin operating in 2017 and is expected to carry over 200m passengers in its first year.
