Follow in Tom Hanks' footsteps in Rome

19 May 2009

The state tourist board of Italy has encouraged film fans to pay a visit to Rome this year to see the sights that feature in the new Tom Hanks movie Angels and Demons.

Visitors can head to Vatican City to take in the impressive spectacle of St Peter's Basilica, which at a total size of more than 22,000 square metres is the largest church in the world.

The Vatican Museums are home to an impressive collection of art and the iconic paintings by Michelangelo that adorn the walls and ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Another location that features in Angels and Demons is Castel Sant'Angelo, a monument built on the banks of the Tiber that houses the National Museum and collections of ancient arms.

Movie fans may also be interested in visiting the Pantheon during their trip to Rome or heading to Piazza Navona, which is home to three grand fountains and four statues that were built to symbolise the four corners of the world.

Angels and Demons was adapted from a book by Dan Brown, the writer of The Da Vinci Code, which used Paris as its main setting.
