The credit crunch has not stopped British people from wanting to go abroad this year but has led to a rise in demand for bargain breaks, according to research by Tesco Travel Money.
A survey of more than 2,000 British adults found that 54% are intending to travel overseas in 2009, with 29% planning two or more holidays.
However, of those people who will be taking foreign trips, 34% are expecting to spend less than last year, with 12% saying they will spend 'significantly less'.
More than half (54%) of respondents to the poll are planning to reduce their food and drink costs, 43% will buy fewer gifts and duty-free items and a third (33%) will book a self-catering break to avoid eating out.
A spokesperson for Tesco Travel Money said: 'It's great to see that holidaymakers are pulling out the stops to get value for money and making sacrifices to ensure they get their two weeks in the sun.'
For many Brits, the first break of 2009 will have been enjoyed over the May bank holiday period. Prior to the long weekend, Abta - The Travel Association predicted that 1.8m people would be heading overseas.
