Melbourne airport set for major upgrade
28 May 2009
Melbourne airport's international terminal is set to undergo its largest upgrade since it was opened in the late 1960s.
The development is set to cost more than AU$330m (£162m) and will add a total of 25,000 square metres of new space to the terminal.
One of the biggest additions to the facility will be a new security and customs processing area for outbound international travellers. There will also be a brand new 7,000-square-metre passenger concourse.
By 2011, Melbourne airport will boast a new international passenger precinct featuring ten-metre-high windows.
Travellers will be able to enjoy impressive views across the airfield from the new precinct, which has been designed to incorporate elements of Melbourne architecture.
People planning a visit to Melbourne this year will have the opportunity to attend a number of events in the city, including the Chocolate Rush Festival on 8 and 9 August and the Writers Festival from 21 to 30 August.
