Scotland's west coast 'perfect for an island break'

3 Jun 2009

Travellers in the UK see the west coast of Scotland as the perfect destination for a British island break, according to new research.

Of the 2,276 people surveyed by YouGov, 14% said that Scotland's western isles - such as Arran, Skye, Islay and Mull - are an ideal spot for an island getaway in the UK.

Nearly a third (32%) of respondents chose Scottish islands in general as their destination of choice.

David Else, Lonely Planet's coordinating author for a new guide to Great Britain, said: 'The islands are described in our new guide as a great area to visit so we're really pleased that they are getting the recognition that they deserve.

'With more Brits holidaying at home this year and many people keen to try somewhere off the beaten track, these islands' popularity may be about to take off.'

Activities on offer to visitors on Scotland's western islands include whale watching, golf and whisky tours.

VisitScotland is currently promoting the country's tourism industry through its Perfect Day campaign, which has been launched to showcase the variety of things to see and do in the country.
