Abta offers overseas card advice

8 Jun 2009

Abta - The Travel Association has teamed up with the UK Cards Association to publish an advice guide on the use of debit and credit cards abroad.

According to the UK Cards Association, there were 317m overseas transactions on cards issued in the UK last year.

Britons used plastic for approximately £27.8bn of overseas transactions in 2008, an increase of more than 10% on the previous year.

The new guide, which can be downloaded from the UK Cards Association website, offers information on charges that may be incurred through overseas card transactions and how travellers can reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of fraud.

Casia Zajac, head of communications for Abta, said: 'There are a range of payment options available for UK consumers going abroad and paying with plastic continues to be an increasingly popular choice.

'The advice in this guide provides holidaymakers and business travellers with useful information that can help ensure a safe and stress-free time overseas.'

Prior to the second bank holiday weekend in May, Abta predicted that some 1.8m British holidaymakers would head abroad over the period.
