Record visitors for Venice Biennale art show

8 Jun 2009

The 53rd International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale opened yesterday (7 June) and saw record visitor numbers.

Some 4,776 tickets were sold to the public for the opening day of the show, with a further 3,774 journalists attending during a three-day preview period.

Art enthusiasts will be able to catch flights to Venice to see the exhibition at the Giardini and Arsenale exhibition venues up to 22 November.

The main section of the display is entitled Making Worlds and features work by some 90 artists from 77 different countries.

Directing the exhibition this year is Daniel Birnbaum, who has been rector of the Staedelschule in Frankfurt since 2001.

Speaking about the show, Mr Birnbaum said: 'The title of the exhibition, Making Worlds, expresses my wish to emphasise the process of creation. A work of art represents a vision of the world and if taken seriously it can be seen as a way of making a world.'

The International Art Exhibition is one of the most popular parts of the Venice Biennale, a cultural institution that also includes sections dedicated to cinema, dance, theatre and music.
