Carnival opens new attraction in the Caribbean

Carnival Cruise Lines has developed a new attraction on the Caribbean island of Grand Turk that will provide some new shore excursions for travellers.

Conch World welcomed its first guests from the ship Carnival Pride yesterday (9 June) and will host grand opening festivities in the autumn.

The new attraction, which has been four years in the making and came at a cost of more than $1m (£609,000), consists of a number of brightly coloured buildings that celebrate the queen conch, which is native to Grand Turk.

Conch World is only the second tourist facility in the world dedicated to the queen conch, a snail that is important to the health of nearby coral reefs as it provides food for sharks, turtles, lobsters and other marine creatures.

Graham Davis of Carnival Cruise Lines said: 'The Caribbean is vital to the continued growth and success of the North American cruise industry, and the Grand Turk Cruise Center and Carnival Corporation are very pleased to support the development of this spectacular and unique attraction.

'In addition to serving as an example of responsible, sustainable tourism development, Conch World will have tangible economic benefits, including creating numerous job opportunities for the local community.'

Carnival Cruise Lines operates itineraries in the Caribbean that take in destinations including the Bahamas, Barbados, Grand Cayman and the eastern coast of Mexico.
