The national tourist board of Spain has underlined the appeal of the country to British holidaymakers, saying it is so familiar that it is seen as a 'home from home'.

Carmen Hernandez, a market analyst at the Spanish tourist office in London, said that the country's promotion budget has been increased in recent years as it looks to attract more visitors.

Promotional campaigns are focusing on the sense of comfort and familiarity that British travellers feel in Spain.

'We want to emphasise the idea of how Spain is a home from home for British tourists. Almost 90% of Britons who travelled to Spain in 2008 had already been there on holiday before,' Ms Hernandez said.

'The links between both countries are undeniable and strong. [Britons] feel safe and secure there and they know they can communicate easily with people, drive on safe road[s] and get the best healthcare if they need it.'

The most popular destinations in Spain include Barcelona, Malaga and Alicante, which can all be easily reached by catching flights with British Airways, easyJet, Flybe and other airlines.
