Glasgow airport has announced plans to launch a 'summer invasion' of northern England this year in a bid to attract more travellers to the Scottish hub.
Bosses at the airport said that they were hoping to attract family holidaymakers based in the north of England to set off on their break from Glasgow.
One of the main destinations to be targeted by the campaign is Carlisle, from where thousands of families travel south to fly from Manchester, despite the fact that Glasgow is closer.
Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow airport, pointed out that English travellers can save money by flying from the Scottish base owing to the differences between the countries' school holiday periods.
'Typically, a family of four could save hundreds of pounds on their summer holiday if they fly from Glasgow airport during August or September,' Ms McMillan said.
'With cheaper holidays, cheaper parking and a shorter journey time from Carlisle, it makes financial sense to fly from Glasgow.'
Flights to Orlando, Barcelona, Dubai and other destinations are provided by carriers including
Virgin Atlantic, easyJet and
Emirates from Glasgow.
