Lisbon to host Smithsonian exhibition
16 Jun 2009

An acclaimed exhibition that has previously been based at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC will come to Lisbon, Portugal this summer.

Entitled Encompassing the Globe: Portugal and the World in the 16th and 17th Centuries, the exhibition will be based at the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lisbon from 9 July to 11 October.

It features some 250 rare artefacts borrowed from private collections around the world.

The items represent a period during the 16th century when Portuguese sailors began crossing international waters to create a global trading network, forging commercial and cultural links between regions as far and wide as Europe, South America, Africa and Asia.

Highlights of the exhibition include terracotta statues and other religious works from 17th century Brazil, salt cellars and hunting horns carved in Africa and rare world maps designed by Portuguese and Italian cartographers.

People interested in seeing the display can catch flights to Lisbon with British Airways, Lufthansa, KLM and other carriers.
