Major art exhibition comes to Brisbane
19 Jun 2009

A landmark exhibition put together by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York recently opened at the Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane.

Entitled American Impressionism and Realism, the display will run until 30 September.

The Queensland Art Gallery is the only venue outside New York to host the exhibition, which features a selection of 71 paintings by 34 artists.

Visitors will be able to learn all about the American Impressionist and Realist art movements by looking at the work of painters such as John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt and Childe Hassam.

The display will also highlight how Australian artists responded to the cultural movements of the 20th century through more than 30 works by Tom Roberts, Charles Conder and others.

Art enthusiasts visiting Brisbane this year can also see a showcase of contemporary work from the Queensland Art Gallery collection, which will be open until 25 October.

The gallery is located on the south bank of the Brisbane river, next to the Gallery of Modern Art.
