19 Jun 2009

Art enthusiasts will be catching flights to Vilnius, Lithuania this summer to pay a visit to a brand new gallery due to open in the city tomorrow (20 June).

The National Art Gallery, which is being launched in association with the Lithuanian Art Museum, will be officially opened by Valdas Adamkus, president of the Republic of Lithuania.

It will serve as the country's museum of 20th and 21st century art, housing and exhibiting a collection of some 46,000 works that date from 1900 to the present day.

The museum will open with two exhibitions, one of which will feature pieces by highly influential modern artists such as Edvard Munch, Wassily Kandinsky and Frantisek Kupka.

Lolita Jablonskiene, chief curator of the new gallery, said: 'The opening of the National Gallery of Art as the first Lithuanian institution fully-equipped with proper and specific museum facilities and conditions delivers an exponential boon for the Lithuanian people, as for the first time artworks associated with the modern masters, such as Kupka, Scoenberg and Munch, can be shown here in Vilnius.'

People interested in visiting the gallery can catch flights to Vilnius with Czech Airlines, Lufthansa, SAS and other carriers.
