25 Jun 2009
Holidaymakers intending to do some driving during an overseas break this year have been reminded of the importance of checking the road laws and requirements of their destination.
According to research by car insurer Sheilas' Wheels, nearly 3.4m British people intend to take a driving holiday in Europe this summer, with France the most popular destination.
A third (33%) of this group said they thought that driving rules are the same on the continent as they are in the UK, while 85% were unaware of the fact that the maximum speed limit in France is 130km/h.
Jacky Brown, a spokeswoman for Sheilas' Wheels, said: 'It's vital that motorists do their research beforehand by making sure they understand the basic rules and regulations for driving on foreign roads.'
The company offered a number of tips for people planning to drive abroad this year, advising motorists to carry identification with them at all times and to remember basic safety precautions such as wearing seatbelts.
Holidaymakers planning to take a driving holiday in France can see some of the country's most picturesque regions, such as Provence and the Dordogne.
