Qantas has announced that it will show its commitment to the sustainable travel sector by sponsoring a category at the National Australian Tourism Awards.

The accolade will recognise tourism operators based in Australia that have implemented sustainable practices, conserved natural resources and sought to minimise their impact on the environment.

Qantas said that the award will also acknowledge companies that provide a unique travel experience to their customers.

Rob Gurney, a spokesman for the airline, revealed that the winner of the prize will receive $25,000 (£12,200) in cash.

He added: 'The Qantas Group has a carefully coordinated approach to managing the environmental impacts of its operations in place.

'As a result we established this award last year to reward tourism operators who have demonstrated a real commitment to their environmental sustainability.'

Qantas announced earlier this month that it was introducing an online check-in and seat selection facility for passengers on its international flights.
