Bavaria prepares to welcome cows home

Holidaymakers visiting Oberstdorf in the Bavaria region of Germany in September will be able to experience one of the town's most popular and entertaining events.

On 11 and 12 September, thousands of cows are brought down into the valley following months of grazing on Alpine pastures during the summer.

Known as 'Viehscheid', the traditional event sees the farm animals treated like celebrities as they return to the town and are collected by their owners.

To celebrate the occasion, local people dress in traditional attire and gather in their thousands to watch the cows come home.

The cow drive is followed by a folk fair featuring music, dancing and plenty of local food and beer.

Holidaymakers visiting Oberstdorf can also explore the 200km of hiking trails found in the area.

Another highlight of a trip to Bavaria is the city of Munich, a highly popular tourist destination that boasts several museums and sights such as the Frauenkirche in the city centre.
