British tourists are showing increasing interest in South Africa as a holiday destination, according to the World Travel Market.

The rising popularity of the country was attributed to the favourable exchange rate and 'World Cup fever'.

While the pound has plummeted against other currencies such as the euro, its value against the South African rand is the most favourable for years for British travellers.

M&S Money said this year that the rand was its fourth most popular currency, while Post Office Travel Services named South Africa the third cheapest destination for holidaymakers from the UK.

World Travel Market chairman Fiona Jeffery said: 'South Africa is a brilliant holiday destination which is growing in popularity amongst British travellers due to the favourable exchange rate.

'The 2010 World Cup has seen the profile of South Africa rise in the UK. This increased profile alongside the favourable exchange rate has seen the interest in and booking to South Africa increase significantly in 2009.'

The World Cup will be held between 11 June and 11 July next year, with matches taking place in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and other destinations.
