InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) will open its first property under the Crowne Plaza brand in Portugal next year as part of an agreement with hotel company Grupo Marope.
The Crowne Plaza Vilamoura, which is due to open in January 2010, is located on the beach, close to the Vilamoura Casino and 20km from Faro airport.
Golfers are expected to make particularly good use of the new property as it is located within walking distance of five golf courses in Vilamoura and 20 minutes drive from a number of other clubs in the Algarve.
The hotel will have 327 rooms and suites, a garden with palm trees, a swimming pool, a driving range and other facilities.
Hylko Versteeg, IHG's director of development in Spain and Portugal, said: 'Since introducing Crowne Plaza to Europe more than 20 years ago, it has become one of the world's fastest growing upscale hotel brands.
'Signing this deal with the Grupo Marope, which takes us into Portugal, is a milestone for us.'
IHG will also be expanding its presence in Africa this year with the opening of two new hotels in South Africa and one in Kenya.
