Regional airline
Flybe has claimed that it is now the UK's leading domestic carrier following the release of new statistics by the Civil Aviation Authority.
The operator cited figures showing that the
Flybe brand carried 26% of all domestic travellers in the UK in April, ahead of easyJet with a 23% share.
In terms of total passenger numbers,
Flybe was at the top of the list with some 451,413 customers, beating major competitors such as
British Airways and
bmi.
The regional airline also strengthened its position at London Gatwick during the months of April and May, carrying more domestic passengers from the airport than any other operator.
Mike Rutter,
Flybe's chief commercial officer, said: 'Just six years ago,
Flybe was a distant fifth in the UK domestic market. It's a mark of how far we've come that, in less than a decade, we're now number one a phenomenal achievement.
'We now serve 35 airports in the UK, affirming our commitment to keeping Britain on the move through these challenging economic times.'
Alongside its range of domestic services,
Flybe offers flights to Paris, Alicante, Milan and other European destinations from various airports in the UK.
