A new luxury sports resort is now under development in the Red Sea resort of El Gouna in Egypt, it has been announced.

Ancient Sands is a private complex being constructed by Orascom Development Holding (ODH) within easy reach of the Red Sea and the marina.

It is being equipped with facilities including an 18-hole championship golf course, a spa treatment centre, swimming pools, restaurants and apartments.

The first phase of the development is set to begin welcoming guests in December 2011.

Mayar Abdel Aziz, vice-president of destination marketing for ODH, said: 'The Ancient Sands Resort is a welcome addition to El Gouna. It will be built to uncompromising standards to provide a unique experience for all.

'The range of facilities it will provide will add to the large number of exciting services El Gouna already offers its guests.'

Along with Sharm el Sheikh, El Gouna is one of the most popular Red Sea resorts in Egypt. Both destinations are known as watersports hotspots, providing facilities for scuba diving, windsurfing, waterskiing and other activities.
