QE2 to serve as Cape Town hotel
21 Jul 2009
The QE2, the former flagship of the Cunard cruise line, is to be sent to Cape Town to serve as a floating hotel, it has been announced.
Dubai-based property developer Nakheel bought the liner for £50m and intends to use the vessel as a hotel in the United Arab Emirates.
Before moving to its permanent home in the Middle East, the QE2 will be based at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town to provide more accommodation during the 2010 World Cup.
A spokesman for Nakheel said: 'It has been our intention for some time to provide a short-term opportunity to enjoy QE2 as a stationary hotel in her current condition before refurbishment begins.
'It is clear that Cape Town provides the best opportunity for us to open QE2 to visitors as quickly as possible.'
Nakheel is the company behind some of Dubai's biggest developments, including the Palm Jumeirah, Discovery Gardens and the Ibn Battuta Mall.
