The city of Barcelona has launched a new technological initiative that provides free internet access at a number of Wi-Fi hotspots.
At present, city residents and visitors can access the internet at 170 locations around Barcelona that are clearly marked with 'W' signs.
The city council hopes to increase the number of wireless hotspots to 300 before the end of the year and 500 by the end of 2010.
Travellers who own laptops, internet-enabled mobiles, PDAs and other devices will be able to access the internet at a number of public locations around Barcelona, including libraries, museums, markets and sports centres.
City mayor Jordi Hereu described the initiative as 'Barcelona's ambition applied to 21st-century systems'.
Ramon Garcia-Bragado, deputy mayor for urban planning, said: 'This is not a commercial or professional service, but rather a public one.'
It was also announced this week that a new Wi-Fi hotspot was being opened at the Edna Barnes Salomon Room in the New York Public Library, where visitors can either use their own laptop to access the internet or borrow one for free.
