Paris hosts summer events
3 Aug 2009

Travellers planning a last-minute summer break in Paris this year will have the opportunity to enjoy a range of events and festivals in the city.

Running until 20 August is the annual Paris Plages tradition, which sees two sites - Voie Georges Pompidou in the fourth district and from Bassin la Villette to Stalingrad in the 19th district - turned into inner-city beaches.

Visitors can relax on the sand, eat ice cream and enjoy free concerts on the river banks.

One of the big highlights of Paris' summer of culture for music fans will be the Jazz a la Villette festival, which will be held in the park of La Villette from 1 to 13 September.

Around 200 artists and 50 groups are set to participate in the festival this year, including Ornette Coleman, Ron Carter and John Zorn.

Flights to Paris are available with easyJet, Air France and other carriers, while Eurostar offers direct rail services to the city from London St Pancras, Ashford and Ebbsfleet stations in south-east England.
